Alternative Route to Certification Program

Program’s Mission and Goals

The South Dakota Department of Education Alternative Route allows prospective teachers to become a certified teacher in just three years. The program consists of on-the-job training for one year, six semester hours of pedagogy and other related coursework, and three semester hours each in human relations and South Dakota Indian studies.

Eligibility and How to Apply

Candidates must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution that was earned at least two years ago.
  • Have a degree in the desired content area or five years of work experience in a related field.
  • Have a 2.5 or higher GPA.
  • Receive an offer of employment from a South Dakota school district.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Complete a screening interview.

Certificate Only

Program’s Mission and Goals

The Certificate Only program is a modification of the Alternative Route to Certification Program. If a candidate’s previous education or work experience meets certain program standards, he or she can be exempt from having to re-take courses.

Candidates must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Have at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Have completed 30 to 35 credit hours of subject-relevant coursework.
  • Pass the PRAXIS II test.
