Become a Substitute Teacher in Oregon

Individuals who wish to apply for their Oregon Substitute Teacher license must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution
  • Complete an approved teacher preparation program* or hold a valid license issued by another state within the endorsement area
  • Successfully complete CBEST or PPST exam(s) or verify completion of a doctorate degree from an accredited institution
  • Pass all required subject matter exams within endorsement areas, or verify five years of full-time employment in a licensed position in an out-of-state public or private school.

*Applicants who have not completed a teacher education program or been licensed in any state must have an employer co-apply for a substitute teaching license.

The 8-week Harvard Bok Teaching Certificate online short course is delivered by Harvard’s Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, in association with HarvardX. Students in this course will engage deeply with the most relevant research on effective teaching methods in the higher education context, while refining their own practices, portfolio, and teaching philosophy.
