Become a Substitute Teacher in Kentucky

The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board issues two types of substitute teaching certificates (General and Emergency), depending on the candidate’s teaching background and/or level of experience.

Kentucky offers a five-year certificate to substitute teachers who meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a valid or expired teaching license through the state of Kentucky, have completed an accredited four-year teacher preparation program and hold a B.A.
  • Complete the application form.
  • Submit a non-refundable $15 money order, made payable to the Kentucky state treasurer (or EPSB’s E-Pay system).

Candidates who hold a valid out-of-state teaching certificate must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete the application form.
  • Submit all official college transcripts (undergraduate and graduate degrees, if applicable).
  • Submit a valid copy of out-of-state teaching certificate.
  • Submit a non-refundable $15 money order, made payable to the Kentucky state treasurer (or EPSB’s E-Pay system).

FEATURED ONLINE TEACHING IN HIGHER EDUCATION SHORT COURSE

The 8-week Harvard Bok Teaching Certificate online short course is delivered by Harvard’s Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, in association with HarvardX. Students in this course will engage deeply with the most relevant research on effective teaching methods in the higher education context, while refining their own practices, portfolio, and teaching philosophy.

Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate

Applications for emergency substitute teaching employment are not submitted through the Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB), but applicants must apply for their one-year emergency certification through EPSB. In order to be eligible to hold an Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from a state and regionally accredited college/university.
  • Have at least 96 semester hours of college credit.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.45.
