Indiana Substitute Teacher Requirements

The following requirements are mandated by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to obtain a substitute teacher permit:

  • Hold a high school diploma (or GED equivalent).
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pay a non-refundable Substitute Fee at a total of $16.32 ($15.00 fee + $1.36 processing).
  • Meet the requirements set by each individual school district. (In the state of Indiana, each school corporation determines the standards, assessments and employment for their substitute teachers.)

Individuals who meet these requirements may then apply for a position through the IDOE’s Licensing Verification and Information System (LVIS). LVIS is designed to allow Indiana educators to apply for and receive their teaching credentials online.
