Summer Conferences for Teachers

For many teachers, summer is the best time to catch up on professional development. Whether you want to enhance your teaching skills, network with other educators or search for teaching jobs, you’ll find a wide variety of helpful conferences scheduled for summer. Here’s a sampling of some of the teacher conferences going on this summer:

ISTE 2012
June 24 to 27, San Diego Convention Center, CA

The International Society for Technology in Education has chosen “Expanding Horizons” as the theme for its 33rd annual conference and exposition. The event will include nearly 700 sessions and 150 workshops focusing on technology solutions for schools. A multitude of edtech-related professional development opportunities will be offered for teachers, technology coordinators, administrators and policymakers. For those who are unable to travel to the conference, ISTE provides several ways to access conference programs remotely.

ACSD 2012 Summer Conference
July 1 to 3, St. Louis, MO

“Revolutionizing the Way We Teach and Lead” is the theme for ACSD’s professional development conference. Founded in 1943, ACSD (the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an organization of 150,000 educators that is dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for schools. Its 2012 Summer Conference will feature more than 140 sessions covering the possibilities offered by new technologies, tools and learning directions. According to conference organizers, learning opportunities will be available for teachers and administrator from all school levels.

Learning Forward 2012 Summer Conference
July 22 to 25, Sheraton Denver Downtown, Denver, CO

Learning Forward is an international membership association whose mission is to increase student achievement by providing effective professional development for educators. The organization’s 2012 Summer Conference is aimed at helping teacher leaders and administrators develop professional learning opportunities for the educators with whom they work. Conference sessions will be conducted by school-based professionals who can provide a peer perspective.

READ 180 National Summer Institute
July 23 to 26, The Hyatt Regency, New Orleans, LA

Scholastic sponsors this national four-day conference, which is in its seventh year. Participants will focus on implementing READ 180 and System 44 programs for striving readers and special education students. Featured workshops will be led by distinguished experts and award-winning authors, including Byron Pitts of 60 Minutes, Sharon Robinson (author and daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson), Dangerous Minds author LouAnne Johnson and 2011 National Teacher of the Year Michelle Shearer.

AVID Summer Institutes 2012
Dallas, Orlando, Sacramento, Indiana, Philadelphia, San Diego

AVID (for Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system that targets elementary through post-secondary school-wide learning and performance. The AVID program currently serves more than 425,000 students in 4,800 schools nationwide. AVID Summer Institutes are three-day conferences that will be held in six cities between June and August. Education professionals including teachers, administrators and counselors from contracted schools will learn the latest AVID methodologies and strategies.

National PTA Convention
June 21 to24, San Jose McEnery Convention Center, San Jose, CA

The 116th Annual National PTA Convention and Exhibition provides a wide range of workshops, sessions and exhibits for PTA leaders and members. Teachers can benefit from the convention by learning how to be more active in their school’s PTA and gaining more perspective on parent’s education issues and concerns.
