California Alternative Teacher Certification

Alternative California teacher certification programs are offered through a variety of programs and institutions.

Requirements are different for single-subject or secondary school teachers, and multiple-subject or elementary school teachers. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing offers information on how to earn both multiple-subject teaching credentials and single-subject teaching credentials through colleges and universities, internship programs, private programs, and Peace Corps initiatives. Alternative routes to receiving credentials for working in special education programs are also available.

California teacher certification programs are not all run directly by the government, and so in order to choose or apply for a program, it is important to visit each program’s website.
