Ms. Dup, a teacher of 21 years, teaches at a small rural school in Louisiana. She teaches 9th grade physical science, 10th biology, chemistry, and physics. She is also the Beta club sponsor, junior class sponsor, ring ceremony sponsor, junior-senior prom sponsor and new teacher mentor.

Below is our interview with Ms. Dup:

What inspired you to teach?

I love teaching, reading, and learning about science and I love spending my days with teenagers

What classroom methods are most helpful in pushing students towards their goals?

Visual learning. I use posters, models, an active board, art, projects, hands on activities.

What is the one thing you wish you'd known when you started in the classroom?

Relax and see each child as a gift and a privilege to teach. I have experienced tragic hurricanes and tragic deaths of my students. I now see each child with all of their strengths, weaknesses and baggage as a future productive adult. My job is help them find their way and their purpose.

What did your training teach you that was most helpful in preparing you to enjoy and thrive in a classroom today?

I have my Masters and Specialist Degree in Education Leadership with emphasis in technology. My training opened my to you teaching methods (differentiated instruction and Web 2.0 social networking tools.)

What skills could more developed if you were to enroll in a teacher training program?

I can always use help in discipline techniques and organizational ideas for very large classes. I can also use training on how to handle special education students, emotionally disturbed, and the physical handicapped in a regular education science classroom.

"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you will help them to become what they are capable of being." - Johann W von Goethe
