Organizations
The English language is commonly referred to as the “global language” due to its reach and influence. Due to this status, it is in high demand, taught all over the world under varied circumstances by many different organizations. Below is a list of a few groups from around the globe that are involved in the field of teaching English as a second language.
American Organizations
California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE): a non-profit group incorporated in 1976 to promote high levels of literacy in English and at least one other language through bilingual education and quality foreign language instruction for all students in California.
Carolina TESOL: a non-profit body whose purpose is to improve the quality of education for English language learners and to promote effective intercultural communication and understanding in North and South Carolina.
Illinois Association for Multilingual Multicultural Educaiton (IAMME): a professional body that promotes quality educational policies and practices for linguistically and culturally diverse students, including English language learners.
National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA): an association operated by George Washington University, Graduate School of Education and Human Development under contract from the U.S. Department of Education, which collects, coordinates, and conveys a broad range of research and resources in support of an inclusive approach to high-quality education for English language learners.
Foreign Organizations
Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA): a national coordinating group representing teachers of English to speakers of other languages in Australia, which aims to promote and strengthen English, while supporting and respecting people’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
British Columbia Teachers of English as an Additional Language (B.C. TEAL): a professional body for teachers of English language learners in British Columbia that aims to grow and develop the field.
Center for Canadian Language Benchmarks: an organization that promotes greater consistency and effectiveness in adult ESL and second language instruction in Canada, serves as a national TESL resource center and inquiry service, and sets the national standard for the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
English Language Teachers Association-Rhine (ELTA-Rhine): an association in Germany that provides information on upcoming activities and workshops, and connects English language teachers.
Thailand TESOL (ThaiTESOL): a professional, non-profit, non-political association in Thailand that aims to strengthen English language education at all levels, to undertake research in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, to offer scholarships and to disseminate information.
International Organizations
International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT): a professional group that develops, integrates, evaluates and manages instructional technology for the teaching and learning of language, literature and culture.
International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL): a professional body whose aim is to link, develop and support English language teachers around the world through regular publications, conferences, scholarships and local teachers’ organizations.
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Incorporated (TESOL Inc.): a professional association whose aim is to develop and maintain professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide.
Certification Organizations
International Teacher Training Organization (ITTO): part of a network of teacher training and language institutes dedicated to providing professional quality, highly-practical TEFL / TESL / TESOL certificate courses.
American TESOL Institute: An online TESOL certification program that has been evaluated and recommended for college credit by The American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service. (ACE CREDIT)
