Students from all around the world need great teachers. Whether you’re teaching internationally, involved in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or ESL (English as a Second Language) international teaching skills are very important. There are several important issues to be aware of when teaching international students either domestically or abroad:
Culture – International students and parents sometimes have different views on education, the educational system, what should be taught vs. what should not be taught, among many other things. Every culture has their own view of education.
Language – More specifically, a student’s language may have an effect on their education. Especially for TESOL/ESL, but also very important to teaching internationally is the native tongue of the student. This may not be something as simple as English, Spanish, or Mandarin, either. Oftentimes specific regional dialects will also play a role in the education of international students.
Location – Urban? Rural? Desert or tundra? Geography and region can also have an impact on teaching, especially in an unfamiliar international context.
Teaching international students will present new and unfamiliar challenges, but is also highly rewarding. In addition to providing education to students who need it, international teachers will learn about new cultures, and often, about themselves.
